Comhrá with Crana College, Buncrana

On Tuesday 5 May, the Supreme Court hosted a Comhrá with students of Crana College in Buncrana, Donegal.  Students with an interest in studying law spent an hour asking questions to Mr Justice Maurice Collins of the Supreme Court and Ms Justice Siobhán Stack of the High Court.

Comhrá (the word for ‘conversation’ in Irish) is an education initiative of the Supreme Court that enables secondary school students to participate in live question-and-answer sessions with judges of the Supreme Court from anywhere in Ireland by video call.  The programme provides students with an opportunity to ask judges questions about their work, the role of the Supreme Court and of the courts system more generally within our democracy, allowing them to gain an insight and understanding of the function of the Supreme Court and promote an interest in law.

The Crana College students asked questions about the Irish court system, the day-to-day life of a Judge, and advice for following a future career in law.  Additionally, the Judges spoke with students about the challenges of gaining legal work experience in the modern legal field, the difference between practicing law in Dublin compared to other parts of the country, and how young barristers find work in their early careers.
