The Dublin Probate Office updates this page regularly to show which applications are currently being processed. Processing times vary depending on how complete and accurate an application is, and on demand and resources at the time.
These timelines apply to the Dublin Probate Office only. District Probate Registries have their own processing times, which vary by office.

What the application types mean
Solicitor applications
Applications for Grants of Representation lodged through a solicitor’s firm.
An application will be returned in full, without further assessment, if:
- the applicant has no title, or title is set out incorrectly, or
- the application raises three or more queries.
Personal applications
Applications made directly by members of the public. There is currently a 10–12 week waiting time for appointments with the Probate Office in Dublin. Find out what to expect at your appointment in the step-by-step guide to applying for probate.
Copy requests for wills and grants
Requests for a copy of a will or grant. Copies of documents issued before January 2020 may take longer because older records are stored off-site.

The Probate Portal
Who can use the Portal
At present:
- only solicitors can use the Portal – personal applications are not yet supported
- only applications for Grants of Probate can be submitted
- foreign domicile cases are not supported
- the date of death must be on or after 5 December 2001
- all applicants must:
- be over 18 years old
- have the capacity to make their own decisions
- be named as executors in the will

Switching from a paper application to the Portal
If you are a solicitor, you can withdraw a lodged paper application and resubmit it through the Portal, but only if:
- the application is eligible for online submission, and
- it has been lodged but not yet been processed.
If your application has already been queried, it cannot be withdrawn and resubmitted through the Portal.
To withdraw, send a written request for the attention of the Probate Officer. Your request should include:
- the name of the deceased
- the application reference number (if available)
- any other relevant identifying details (for example, the date of death)
- the reason for withdrawal
- confirmation that the case is eligible for online submission
If your withdrawal is approved:
- all papers will be returned to your office
- you will need to apply to our Finance Unit for a refund of your fee
- you will need to pay the application fee through the Portal when applying online
- the applicant will need to complete the Statement of Truth through the Portal
